In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, the Advocacy for Sustainable Livelihood Foundation (ASLF), through its Waste to Wealth Initiative, carried out an advocacy and sensitization visit to Federal Government College, Enugu, aimed at promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable waste management among students. What began as a one-day sensitization programme has blossomed into a lasting partnership, culminating in the official relaunch of the school's Environmental Club with a newly elected student executive council.
The students were enlightened on the importance of waste sorting, proper waste disposal, recycling, upcycling, and the economic opportunities embedded in waste management. The session emphasized that waste, when properly managed, can become a valuable resource capable of creating livelihoods, protecting the environment, and fostering sustainable development. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, students learned how everyday actions contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet.
The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive. Inspired by the initiative, they affirmed their commitment to championing environmental sustainability by establishing an Environmental Club within the school. The club serves as a platform to drive environmental awareness and promote positive behavioural change among students, creating a ripple effect that extends from the school into the wider community.
As part of ASLF's commitment to practical action, waste bins were donated to the school to facilitate waste sorting at source and encourage the adoption of proper waste management practices within the school environment. This gesture is expected to strengthen the culture of waste segregation and reinforce the lessons shared during the sensitization programme. By providing the necessary infrastructure, ASLF ensures that the message of environmental responsibility translates into tangible action.
Following up on the discussion with the school administration about strengthening the environmental club, ASLF officially relaunched the Environmental Club. Students elected and inaugurated their Executive Council — young leaders ready to champion environmental sustainability and inspire change within their school and beyond. The election process was student-led, fostering a sense of ownership and democratic participation.
The club provides students with opportunities to learn about environmental protection, leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship through practical activities and projects. Members discover how simple actions can make a big difference and how waste can be transformed into valuable resources. From recycling workshops to community clean-up campaigns, the club's programmes are designed to be hands-on and impactful, preparing students to become environmentally conscious leaders.
